Welcome
to the Headland NJROTC web page,
We are the Naval Science Instructors of the NJROTC program here at Headland
High School and we would like for you to take a few minutes to find out
about our program, who we are and what we do for the Cadets that make up the
Corps of Cadets at HHS. There are many things you hear about our program
but we want you to know the facts about this outstanding regional and national
award winning program and why students should consider joining NJROTC.
Our mission statement is: To instill in students the value of
citizenship, service to our country, personal responsibility, leadership, and a
tremendous sense of accomplishment. We also want you to grow in
self-discipline, character, honor, and all of the good things we want for our
students.
What we are NOT is a recruiting service for the U. S. Navy or any other
branch of the service. There is NO military obligation before,
during or after enrolling in the program. NJROTC is NOT a juvenile
correctional program to straighten out troubled students. If you and your parents want to consider a military
commitment then we will use our years of experience, I retired after 20 years
in the Marines and Chief retired after 20 years in the Navy, to help you make
the right decision for yourself and your goals. If you choose to enter
the military service and have 3 years in NJROTC the Navy will give you an
advanced rank (E-3) that will mean approximately a $350 a month pay raise and
quicker promotion to the next rank. Our main goal is to teach you the
value of continued education and help you afford college through scholarships,
grants, and student loans.
We are seeking students who have a sense of dedication and are motivated and
willing to be challenged. NJROTC is a student driven organization in
which the students (not the instructors) are the prime motivators and decision
makers. The opportunities for greatness in several areas of
competition are inherently incorporated into the program, but it is strictly
the desire level of the cadets that determines their success.
The cost for the program is dedication, motivation, a willingness to be
challenged, and a strong desire to be a well-rounded young American of high
moral character. The Navy provides all books, drill equipment and
uniforms at no cost to the students. A $20 class fee is charged once a
year for the cadets unit T-shirts, name tags, and supplies for uniform
maintenance. Unit fundraisers provide them the opportunity to minimize
any incidental expenses and costs of field trips.
NJROTC has a great academic curriculum but it is more about what happens after
school that motivates our cadets. We have award winning Drill, Air Rifle,
Academic, Orienteering, Athletic, and Color Guard teams that allow our cadets
to perform all over the Wiregrass, our State, and NJROTC Area 08, competing in
Area 08 Field meet competitions, hosting the largest Orienteering Schools and
Camp in the nation, hosting the Area 08 Orienteering Championships, and
competing in the Wiregrass Air Rifle Conference. Our cadets have an
outstanding record of community service and we work with the coaches, band, and
other school activities to allow and encourage our cadets to be as well rounded
as possible and represent the Unit in all areas of the school.
If you have already made the decision to join us, we would like to extend an
enthusiastic Welcome Aboard, if not, we ask that you come in and talk with us
or some of our cadets about joining an award winning program that will mentor,
tutor, and teach you to surrender yourself to something greater than the individual,
success as a team. Our cadets, after facing possible closure of the unit
last year had the best year in unit achievements, ever. They won the Most
Improved Unit Award for Area 08(a 5 state, 53 school areas), finished as the 8th
Most Improved Unit in the Nation, and won the Distinguished Unit Award, placing
us in the top 10 percent of NJROTC units nationwide.
Our core values we teach are: Honor, Courage, Commitment. We
develop the Mind, Body, and Spirit to teach our cadets to achieve individual
success and become a part of something greater than themselves and we offer
something for everyone to participate in. I believe this program is the
best program in our school and it will be a life-changing experience for those
that commit themselves to the challenge. The reason I know this is that
many years ago I was one of these cadets at Headland High the first year we had
this program and became a platoon leader and it changed my life. We look
forward to seeing you as a part of this outstanding program, if you have not already
made that decision I ask that you discuss with your parents the advantages of
becoming member of the HHS NJROTC Corps of Cadets.
If you would like to talk with one of the instructors about the unit, please
call us at
693-5548,
if we are not available leave a message and we will return your
call.

Dear
Parent/Guardian of an NJROTC Cadet:
In order for a
cadet to actively participate in NJROTC activities they must be physically
cleared.
A Health Risk
Screening Form (we provide the form) must be filled out and signed by the cadet
and the parent/guardian. On the
reverse side of the Health Risk Screening Form is Preparticipation Physical Exam
Form, which must be filled out and signed by a Doctor.
Additionally, if
your cadet requires medication for asthma the Alabama State Department of
Education requires that a School Medication Prescriber/Parent Authorization must
be filled out and signed by parent/guardian and a Doctor.
NJROTC has
arranged to have physicals completed free of charge.
Doctor Whitehurst (673-0049) gives cadets free physicals.
You must call him for an appointment.
He is located next to the Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
Go past the emergency room and past Health South and turn next left, his
office is on the right.
Available at this
link are the health risk screening and physical forms that your cadet must have
filled out and returned to NJROTC.
If your cadet does not have asthma he/she is not required to have that form
returned.

NJROTC offers
team competition in Marching Drill (with and without drill rifles), Color

compete against other Junior ROTC units from Alabama, Georgia, Florida,
Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee at field meets hosted by
local colleges.
In addition,
NJROTC takes orientation trips to visit various military activities as well as
trips to theme and amusement parks.
We also have
our annual Navy Ball and Awards Banquet.
We are looking forward to another super year in NJROTC. Trips planned so far this year are currently pending and will be posted up soon.
COME JOIN THE
BEST CLASS AT HHS!
NJROTC is not for everyone. It is a class where students are
taught by senior NJROTC students. Only text book lessons are taught by
the instructors. All other instruction is from the students.
It is based upon a rank structure where
the cadets have the opportunity to earn higher ranks and junior cadets must
be respectful of the senior cadets.
Enrollment in NJROTC IN NO WAY obligates a
student for military service. However, should a student enter the
military service after completing NJROTC, they will enlist at a higher
pay grade which means more money each month of their career.
